An Overindulgent October Round Up

0
0

I always said that October was going to be busy; my diary has been crammed to bursting point and Andy has been a bit of a blog widow (an excellent term coined by Angie!) for most of the month, but I've certainly seen much more of London this month and enjoyed every second of it.

The Diary

This month has been incredible in terms of the events I've been lucky enough to attend. My favourite event being an intimate chef's table where I was able to meet Mark Hix and Dan Doherty, an experience that I'll remember for a long time to come. I also attended the relaunch of Palm Court at The Langham where I met the lovely Mehreen and experience a taste of the delicious new menu.

Mark Hix

Andrea and I also attended Stylist Live, where we had a fabulous day hearing all about how ROKA prepare their yellow fin tuna, learning how to cook with Daylsford Cooking School, did a spot of shopping and drank allll the prosecco before heading to Pizza Union to end the night.

Finally, I visited the brand new British Museum of Food by Bompass and Parr, which explores food from the field to the table and beyond. I loved the menu archive, where we saw a selection of the 4,000 menus that Bompass and Parr have been given, as well as exploring the butterfly room, a room dedicated to celebrating the unsung heroes of pollination. It's only there for three months to start with so make sure you head down soon!

British Museum of Food

In very exciting personal news I've also started on the path to finding my first flat in London, how I'm going to decorate it, and even going a bit overboard a designing my dream kitchen!

The Jet Setter

Travel wise October has been quiet as I've spent most of my time in London, but I finished all my Croatia posts and shared all my Hvar and Dubrovnik posts. In Hvar we stayed in the beautiful Hotel Amfora, spent one of the best days of our holiday at Bonj Les Bains Luxury Beach Club and enjoyed sunset cocktails at Hula Hula Bar

Bonj les Bains Hvar

Dubrovnik was a different experience, and a case of avoiding the tourists, so we took to the sea and explored Dubrovnik by kayak. We were also fortunate to stay at one of the most beautiful boutique hotels, St Joseph's before enjoying our final days and coming home.

After exploring Croatia, it was off to Marrakech and telling you about the 10 things I wish I knew before I visited, the most beautiful garden and a very luxurious lunch and hotel!

La Sultana Marrakech

Even though I've not been anywhere this month, next month is looking very exciting with both trips to Paris and trips to Jersey booked!

The Foodie

October has been a crazy month for my inner foodie, especially since it was London Restaurant Festival.  I loved trying both Nobu, with Angie, and Hakkasan Hanwaywith Andy, for the first time as part of the incredible festival menus. I know set menus aren't always as great as choosing what you want from the a la carte menu, but I was very impressed with both of these and can't wait to go back and experience these restaurants again.

Hakkasan Hanway

Hakkasan Hanway

The LRF menu that I was slightly disappointed by was Ten Room at Hotel Cafe Royal, as the starter really didn't live up to expectations.

It wasn't just festival menus that I tried, I also experienced the Japanese Restaurant Hopping Tour with Carrie, which was a great excuse to try different restaurants and catch up with one of my best friends.

Apart from making the absolute most of LRF, I've also spent time eating out catching up with friends, including Honey and Andrea at Jean Jacques, seeing Frankie for breakfast at LIMA Floral (a restaurant I'm determined to go back to!), and catching up with both Frankie and Kirsty for brunch at The Exhibit. There's something wonderful about catching up with friends over good food that just makes me so happy - which is probably why I do it so often!

Finally, I did manage to squeeze a date night in at Noir W1, a cocktail bar in Marylebone that I think is going to become a real date night favourite.

The Country Girl

Even though I've spent a lot of time in  London this month, I've still found time to spend at home with my parents and Mr Sandy, exploring the beautiful countryside and enjoying all the beautiful autumn colours.

Though mum and I normally head up to London for a special treat, we did head down to Down Hall for a Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea which was a real treat and a lovely country house hotel that I would love to revisit.

Top 5 New Openings

There's lots going on in London this month that I'm really excited about; there's something magical about London in the winter, about finding spots like Forest Restaurant and Cabin Bar, the redesigned Selfridge's rooftop restaurant where I can drink the delicious seasonal cocktails and delicious food after an afternoon of Christmas shopping.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

I've only been to Cahoots briefly, but I'm very excited to go back for their Squiffy Picnic (you can read Colleen's review already!): a very British and very unique afternoon tea picnic experience. Served in a hamper with English sparkling wine and hip flasks, I can't wait to try this out!

As I'm already a huge fan of Mr Fogg's, when I heard that Mr Fogg's Tavern has just opened in Covent Garden, well, it was just a case of picking a day and getting it in the diary. Whether you're looking for somewhere new to eat in Covent Garden, or just want a delicious cocktail, especially a G&T, this has to be high up on your November visit list.

York and Albany Winter Chalet
Image Courtesy of York and Albany
Continuing the Winter theme, York and Albany, a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, has just opened their Winter Chalet which looks like the perfect spot to cosy up on a cold winter day. It's the perfect place to retreat to to feel festive and snuggle up away from the London chaos, while still being ideally located next to Regent's Park.

Finally, I'll be heading down to the House of Peroni's latest pop up, themed along the idea of Vita all'Interno, a life lived inside, to experience their secret rooms (accessed only by special keys), the bespoke private, immersive dining experience - it sounds like it's going to be a great night and a highlight of my November!

It's been a fabulous month, and I've already got some very exciting plans coming up in November - I can't wait!

A Taste of the Levant at Ceru

0
0

One the best things about London having such a fantastic foodie scene is that you can travel across continents without paying for the expensive plane ticket. I love the flavours of Eastern Mediterranean cuisine; and so when Ceru invited me to their new pop up restaurant on Canon Street I couldn't resist the temptation!

Levantine cuisine is based upon meze or sharing dishes, which makes it the perfect cuisine to share with friends. It had been quite a while since Lib and I caught up and a couple of glasses of wine and some light sharing dishes was the best way to catch up.

When you order your dishes (around 5 for two to share, plus desserts, are recommended), they arrive as they're ready, meaning that your dishes are as freshly prepared as they could be.

We started with freshly baked Greek pita bread, which was incredible, warm and full of flavour...

And went particularly well with the trio of dips that we ordered! The trio of dips includes: Pancar (roast beetroot, yoghurt, garlic and pistachio nuts), Fadi (fried baby courgette puree with tahini, roast garlic lemon and yoghurt) and Humous topped with chickpeas, green chilli and lemon.

These were all delicious, though I loved the dark flavour of the Fadi; it was unlike anything I had had before and definitely something I'll be looking for on menus again.

The wine was served French style, in a carafe, and was a delicious accompaniment to our catch up and the flavours of our meal. Our waitress was wonderful, and suggested which wines and cocktails would go well with our meal, and was on hand to suggest which dishes she recommended.

The menu is set out into sections, namely dips, salads, vegetables, meat fish and dessert. Although most of the dishes on the menu appealed to us we really wanted to make the most of the vegetable section as it's unlike anything you'll try at a classic European restaurant.

The flavours of these dishes were stunning and made a lovely change from what we would both normally cook on a Monday evening! First to arrive were the herbed courgette and feta cheese fritters, spiced with cumin and cayenne pepper and served with dill and mint. Light, full of flavour and an all round delicious dish.

Our second vegetable dish to arrive was the halloumi, a classic Levantine dish. Rather than the usual fried halloumi, Ceru bake this cheese with cherry tomatoes, olives and oregano, and it was an absolutely outstanding dish. The flavours were tremendous, and even the accompanying salad was polished off by the time we were finished!

Not quite done with the vegetables yet (be proud mum!) we had also ordered the roasted baby aubergines with tomato and chilli, which Lib declared to be the best aubergines she'd ever had. Bursting full of dark flavours, but with a delicious herb yoghurt to calm everything down, this was a superb dish.

The last savoury dish to arrive was the showstopper and understandably the most popular dish at Ceru: the slow roasted lamb shoulder with shawarma spices, with a pomegranate and pistachio dressing.

The meat fell apart on the plate and was infused with delicious herbs and spices, with the pomegranate providing a wonderful texture contrast to the soft meat. A real must order if you ask me!

After finishing our wine, we ordered a couple of cocktails to see us through our desserts, a passionista (vodka, fresh passion fruit, lime juice and vanilla) for Lib. It's one of those dangerously delicious cocktails that you could drink all night... Be warned!

I'm afraid I can't remember the name of my cocktail, but do remember it being gin based and wonderfully drinkable. I love sweet cocktails and this certainly hit the spot!

There are only two desserts on the menu (great for those of us who are bad at decision making!) and so we ordered both and shared.

The yoghurt, pistachio and walnut cake was a surprising hit! I have to admit that I wasn't sure I was going to like this when I first read the menu as I really like my sweet tooth to be satisfied, but it made a delicious dessert that complemented what we had already had.

A wonderfully light cake served with vanilla poached apricots; it was delicious.

Our second dessert was pistachio nut ice cream with roast nut brittle (careful with your teeth on this one!) and burnt honey caramel, which was excellent. I loved the flavour of the ice cream as well as the contrasting nut brittle. I wish more desserts were served with brittle as it really is a favourite of mine!

As Ceru is a pop up it's only in Canon Street until January so make sure you don't miss out and pop down soon!

Breakfast with Benefits with Eat Natural and Skye Gyngell

0
0

When it comes to hidden gems, London has more than her fair share, and so when an invite to an event at Spring Restaurant, promised to be a stunning venue, with Eat Natural fell into my inbox I was more than a little intrigued.

As a girl who has a bowl of granola with yoghurt and fresh fruit every morning for breakfast I wanted to see what was new in the granola world and so hopped along to gorgeous Somerset House for a morning of delicious, healthy food and of hidden gem hunting.

Spring Restaurant
Eat Natural have just launched their super granolas, a range of gluten free granola packed full of protein and lovingly made with Eat Natural's trademark "delicious bits and bobs" - so you can see why it's a breakfast with benefits. It's one of the reasons I love having granola in the morning; I know I'll feel full until lunch time, and as long as I've picked the right granola, I'll have started the day with a healthy helping of fruit, grains and nutrients.

Eat Natural Super Granola

Especially for the event, Skye had created a set of breakfast dishes using the ingredients in the new Eat Natural granolas, which were brought to us as we chatted to other bloggers and Eat Natural representatives. It was a great chance to finally catch up with Aftab and hear all about his upcoming plans and university life!

Spring Restaurant is stunning; I couldn't get over how beautiful and yet simple the decor was, and how warm and welcoming it was.

Spring Restaurant

We sat down to beautifully presented tables...

Spring Restaurant

...and were quickly presented with beautiful bread baskets. I know what you're thinking - healthy bread? Well, these homemade sourdough and rye bread, made with all the lovely seeds from the granola, are as good as it gets! Bread isn't unhealthy, like everything else, in moderation, and is even better when it's homemade and preservative free.

Spring Restaurant

I loved tucking into them with a little Kefir butter and the fig and vanilla jam; sweet yet not overpowering, it was just perfect.

Spring Restaurant

The space we were in, though not huge, was so tastefully decorated that it felt as though there was more than enough room. I can imagine it being the perfect place to curl up on a cold winter's day after a session at Skate Somerset House, or a wonderful respite from the hot London heat in summer.

Spring Restaurant

As it was breakfast, and I'd run out the door without my morning coffee, I ordered a delicious coffee whilst I waited for Aftab (turns out I'm always early and he's always a touch late!)

Spring Restaurant

The granolas are packed full of buckwheat, a gluten free alternative to wheat, Skye made delicious warm pear and lemon turnovers. Now these were something that I could get used to eating every day! Bursting full of flavour with a delicious crisp pasty, I loved them.

Spring Restaurant

I really did feel as though I was in a Parisian garden, somewhere in the golden triangle; it's certainly a luxurious surrounding for any meal that you want to enjoy.

Spring Restaurant

Spring Restaurant

As I'm not much of a porridge fan, I opted for the scrambled eggs with girolle mushrooms which I found absolutely outstanding. Creamy, soft eggs with a beautiful dark mushroom on top, I think I've found a new brunch staple in my house!

Spring Restaurant

I couldn't go away without having a little taster of the granola; and as I say, having a bowl every morning I know what I like in a granola! I loved that this isn't too sweet or sugary, that it's packed with texture and seeds and was all round delicious. I feel a change in morning granola coming on...!

Spring Restaurant

It was a lovely morning chatting away to friends old and new, and laughing with the lovely Hannah, a lady who also appreciates London's green spaces (perfect setting for two green space lovers isn't it?)

Spring Restaurant

Spring Restaurant

Now if you'll excuse me I've got a bowl of granola to eat...!

Spring Restaurant

I'll be back to visit Spring again; this is one gem that's no longer undiscovered in my book! Skye's cooking is incredible, and some of the freshest I've had in London recently, so I'm excited to see what it brings next time I visit!

4 of the Best Luxury Bars in Hvar

0
0

Hvar is fast developing a reputation as being the party central of Hvar, but that doesn't mean that if you're after a luxurious holiday, as we were, that there aren't any luxurious spots to enjoy a nice cocktail!

If you're looking for luxury in Hvar, this is where you want to go for your sundowners!

1. The Top Bar at Hotel Adriana

Enjoy your cocktails with a view over the beautiful harbour, Hvar Fort and the many luxurious yachts in the harbour from this view point. Accurately named "The Top" Bar for its location at the top of Hotel Adriana, this is one spot you don't want to miss.

Make sure you spend a sunset here watching the glorious colours change over the harbour.

2. Bonj les Bains Luxury Beach Club

Book yourself a pontoon and spend the day relaxing, swimming and enjoying cocktails aplenty - or at least that's what we did! Whether you're there as a couple or with friends, this is one luxurious spot that you don't want to miss out on.

3. BB Club at Hotel Riva

Take an evening stroll along the harbour, past where all the boats are and park yourself in BB club. If you're staying in Hotel Riva there's a section that's reserved for guests so you never need to worry about getting a seat, but if you're not staying there, make sure you get there reasonably early as it does tend to get busy.

Make sure you order a frozen strawberry daiquiri: it might just be the best cocktail I had all holiday!

4. The Swim-to-Bar at Hotel Amfora

Hotel Amfora is a paradise when it comes to bars and restaurants and we certainly love the ease of the swim to bar right in the pool. Order a drink, take a swim or read a book and all without leaving the pool - what more could you want? Oh yeah, if you're staying in any Sucnani Hotel, just present your room card and you won't need to carry cash! They're waterproof too so don't worry about your key being damaged!

If you're not looking for luxury but just to have a good time, try Hula Hula bar for sunset - it's the best sunset party in town, or for cheap drinks with a great view, there are lots of bars on the harbour side on the way round to hotels Adriana and Amfora.

A Squiffy Picnic at Cahoots

0
0

London has always been the home of fun, quirky, and down right British events - and Cahoots Squiffy Picnic is the best of the best when it comes to this. Think Champagne, Victoria Sponge, picnic baskets and a good ol' fashioned knees-up in a venue that takes you right back to the 1940s!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic
Even if you're not dressed the part when you arrive, make sure you don the appropriate hat to enjoy your tea!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

I was a touch early (as always..!) and so sipped on my welcome cocktail, a Sipsmith gin based delight as I chatted away merrily to the very friendly waitresses and admired the venue.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Cahoots is a wonderful venue, set in an old air raid shelter and all made up to look like an old train station - and it's done so well, you really do feel as though you've been happily transported back in time.

Every detail has been taken care of, from the old railway seats...

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

To old posters, lampshades and old train maps - I adored it!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

As Steph arrived our lovely waitress brought out our paper sandwich bags, tied up with tiny little clothes pegs!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

As well as Steph's spiffing welcome cocktail! There are 3 options for the Squiffy Picnic, all with the same food options, but a variation in alcohol, whether you'd like ales, wines or Nyetimber sparkiling wine.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

We tucked into our sandwiches, in typical classic British fashion, of jam sandwiches, smoked salmon, cucumber and horseradish and ham - delicious! A real treat as we caught up all about post graduation life and what London living has been like for us both.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

I have to say I rather enjoyed my new hat...! It was a real treat to have such a fun afternoon tea without the formal airs that are usually present in the fabulous London hotels.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Wanting to toast our catch up in true style we both opted for the Nyetimber Sparkling Wine option. After we had time to enjoy our sandwiches we were brought out first picnic hamper!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

And the bubbles were popped...

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Poured and enjoyed!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

There was a little elderflower cordial on the table in case we fancied a little concoction of our own, which was a really lovely touch.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Like two schoolgirls on Christmas morning we quickly began unwrapping our goodies and seeing what was in our hamper! Being the big kid that I am, the first thing I did was build the paper plane whilst supping my sparkling wine, 'cause I'm a big kid who's allowed the fun bubbles now!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

We devoured grapes, cherry tomatoes, sausages, pork pies - and that was just for the savoury selection - whilst chatting, playing a few rounds of cards. A perfect British afternoon don't you think?

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Now, the shortbread - as a Scottish gal I can be quite fussy about this - but I absolutely adored it! Buttery, crunchy and all round moreish - it was exactly what shortbread should be!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Slices of Victoria Sponge, all wrapped up, were soon nibbled at as we opened our second bottle of Nyetimber. If you've not had Nyetimber before, you've got to get your hands on a bottle as it's my favourite English sparkling wine and is a real treat.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Just as we thought it couldn't get any more exciting we remembered that we still had our second, post picnic hamper to enjoy! The second hamper is brimming with damson vodka and delicious Fentiman's tonic water and a cheese and biscuits plate, as well as the classic Cahoots newspaper, aka their cocktail menu.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

We merrily emptied our hip flasks into our picnic mugs, added our tonic water, and enjoyed the delicious tasting damson vodka cocktail!

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

A right jolly knees up if you ask me! And a fabulous, fun and relaxed afternoon tea - a real treat, and an experience that I would really recommend.

Cahoots Squiffy Picnic

Grab your friends, your boyfriend or your mum, and head to Cahoots for a very Squiffy Picnic - it's an experience that you can't miss!

Luxurious Lunching at Roux at the Landau

0
0

There's something magical about London's top hotels, their restaurants and the whole experience of just being there. Walking into The Langham Hotel is walking straight into one of London's most luxurious and most magical hotels, especially when you're going to Roux at the Landau for a luxurious Friday lunch.

Roux at the Landau
It's always wonderful meeting blogging friends, especially in such wonderful surroundings! It was lovely to catch up with Aftab, Mehreen, Sheepa and to meet May over an exquisite lunch, and after recently visiting The Palm Court at the Langham, I was excited to try their fine dining restaurant.

As everyone arrived we started with some smoked salmon and ricotta puff amouse bouches, which were light, full of flavour and the perfect treat to start our meal.

Roux at the Landau

The restaurant itself is one of the most beautifully decorated dining rooms I've seen in London; the perfect setting for a special occasion. I loved the booths, a very intimate setting for a private lunch away from the main hubbub of the busy restaurant.

Roux at the Landau

As I caught up with everyone and heard all about the exciting redevelopment of The Langham London, the restaurants and their international hotels, I sipped on a deliciously crisp glass of white wine and tried to make a decision about what to order!

Roux at the Landau

Even though I'm trying to be (fairly) good at the moment, I couldn't resist the smell of delicious, fresh and still warm sourdough bread to help me decide what to eat!

Roux at the Landau

I opted for the seared scallops served with chanterelles mushrooms and creamed coco beans; a delicious, creamy dish that was just what I was craving. It was also a very generous portion for a starter as the scallops themselves were huge! I have to admit, I was more than a little sad when I finished this dish...!

Roux at the Landau

Another popular option around the table was the crisp blue prawns, served with mango, orange, lobster mayonnaise and corriander, a dish that our waiter claimed to be one of the best on the menu. The prawns, again, made a very generous portion and looked incredible - definitely one to try next time!

Roux at the Landau

The main courses presented an even harder choice, as I couldn't choose between the steak, the venison or the Dover Sole, all of which I love! I ended up choosing the sirloin of beef with fondant potatoes, which was a real treat. A high quality steak with no fat, which I loved, and cooked just as I had asked.

Though I have to say the venison, which May ordered, looked absolutely delicious - it really was an incredibly well presented dish and the meat itself looked wonderful.

Roux at the Landau

Even though I was nearly totally full, I couldn't resist ordering a dessert as, well, there were again too many excellent options to choose from!

I was in between the bitter chocolate millefeuille, maple ice cream and salted pecans - a dish I know is wonderful when it's perfectly done, and a real hangover from my year in France...

Roux at the Landau

And the toffee apple soufflé served with gingerbread ice cream, the dessert that I eventually ordered! I rarely see soufflé on a menu and after a very intense conversation with Sheepa, I realised that I couldn't miss out on it!

It was honestly the best soufflé I've had; light, airy and full of a delicious toffee apple flavour which made it truly incredible.

Roux at the Landau

If you're not of the sweet toothed variety and prefer a cheese selection after your meal, Roux at the Landau will be a dream spot for you, with a cheese trolley that's rolled round the restaurant for you to enjoy at your convenience.

Roux at the Landau

At fine dining restaurants you always expect that the table decorations will be beautiful, but The Langham's in house florist really surpassed themselves with this rose based bouquet of flowers. The colours and the scents were just incredible!

Roux at the Landau

We ended our meal with coffees and the sweetest petit fours - little mini eclairs!

Roux at the Landau

Eclairs really are a weakness of mine and so I couldn't believe my luck when these came out! Beautifully presented and a real indulgence after an already incredibly indulgent meal!

Roux at the Landau

And as if you needed any more convincing that this is a restaurant that's got to be on your London restaurant bucket list - if you're a film buff, you might recognise this setting from a certain new film... If you've seen Burnt then you'll be excited to know that this is where it was filmed!

Roux at the Landau

Next time, I think I'll be back for the newly launched Sunday brunch menu, and hopefully even to stay in such a gorgeous hotel! I think it would be the perfect spot for a London staycation!

Tapas with a View at Aqua Nueva

0
0

This review has been a long time coming I have to admit, 'cause we actually went the night before Andy and I flew to Croatia, but I promise you it's worth the wait!

A couple of months ago I won a Square Meal competition for a meal for 4 at Aqua Nueva and took the opportunity to catch up with Andrea and introduce the men in our lives and boy were we in for a feast!

Aqua Nueva
We started at Whyte & Brown in Kingly Court for a quick drink or two before heading round to Regent Street to be whisked up to the top of the building where Aqua Nueva is located.

It was an incredible opportunity to sample what turned out to be a wonderful menu; both classic and new tapas dishes feature on this extensive menu - there really is something for every taste. And well, I think Andrea and I can safely say that we tried as much as we possibly could for you!

Aqua Nueva

I loved the dark, romantic decor; it was the perfect setting for a double date and an all round fabulous evening.

Aqua Nueva

Firstly, the service was incredible as nothing was too much trouble for the waiters. Our glasses were never left empty, every waiter was knowledgeable about the wine list and knew what to recommend based on our tastes and the same went for the food menu. It really is an excellent fine dining tapas venue.

Aqua Nueva

We started off with some nibbles of delicious bread and olive oil, padron peppers and rustic roasted tomato bread as Andrea caught up and we got to know Micheal and Andy a little more.

Aqua Nueva

We couldn't resist ordering a couple of portions of the Jamon Iberico, hand carved Iberian ham, and thank goodness we couldn't! This was by far the best Iberian ham I've had; bursting full of flavour and as thin as a cloud - it was just incredible.

Aqua Nueva

I hadn't considered it before I was writing this to be honest, but it's dawned on me that tapas, or any sharing style meal, is great for people who don't know each other very well as it's all about digging in and splitting the food between you all.

The next dish to arrive was the salt cod fritters, or bunelos de bacalao: deliciously crispy on the outside and beautifully soft and tender on the inside and jam packed full of flavour. So good that we had to order a second portion!

Aqua Nueva

Aqua Nueva

Now if there's one tapas dish that I can't resist it's croquetas de Jamon Iberica and these really did stand out for me. Deliciously crisp, just as the salt cod fritters had been, and oozing with cheese and that incredible wafer thin Jamon Iberica - I couldn't quite believe how good they were!

Aqua Nueva

Aqua Nueva

From the fish section of the menu we opted for the razor clams; beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. A lovely, light dish to accompany what we had already had.

Aqua Nueva

Being that we're all good adults, we also opted for a couple of vegetable based dishes - a delicious grilled aubergine dish which I loved.

Aqua Nueva

As well as a side salad.

Aqua Nueva

Being that we were slightly hungry we ordered a few more dishes, including the roasted vegetable platter...

Aqua Nueva

And a couple of utterly stand out meat dishes. The soft poached egg with chorizo, pancetta and fried potatoes was the highlight of the evening for me - it was an incredible dish that balanced textures and flavours perfectly.

Aqua Nueva

The lamb loin with pickled cucumber salad, as well as being a beautiful dish, was another winner.

Aqua Nueva

Perfectly pink lamb served with a really delicious salad - this was one dish that had all 4 of us fighting for the last piece!

Aqua Nueva

Lamb and chorizo not really for you? Don't worry, the grilled Iberian pork is delicious; crisp skin with meat that falls to pieces as you break it - what more could you want? In fact, it's even better than the pork that I raved about at Boqueria.

Aqua Nueva

I have to confess that at this point I was entirely full; there was no way that I could eat another thing! Though the others did opt for some desserts, including what looked like an incredible white chocolate bavarois served with cherries and rose perfume.

Aqua Nueva

Aqua Nueva

I'm afraid Boqueria, you've been knocked well and truly off the top spot, 'cause Aqua Nueva well and truly has this one.

Aqua you were an absolute delight - I'm looking forward to going back to Aqua Kyoto and Aqua Shard, too!

Simple Pleasures at MI + ME, St Pancras

0
0

Last Thursday, mum and I checked into the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel as we were traveling to Paris the next morning to celebrate her birthday, and after checking in, settling into our gorgeous room and exploring a little, we realised we were ravenous and very much looking forward to a good meal!

For me, when it comes to traveling, I really want comfort food: simple food done really well, which is exactly what MI + ME, or Milk and Meat, does.

MI + ME St Pancras

The restaurant is based entirely around the best British meats and cheeses that MI + ME can find. Not only does it gleam its name from this, but also in homage to the milk and meat carriages, developed in Victorian times, that took fresh produce all around the country.

A pretty perfect name for a station restaurant if you ask me!

MI + ME St Pancras

Located in the upper concourse of the station, where you can sit and watch the Eurostar trains arrive and depart throughout the day, and within reaching distance of the Booking Office bar and the hotel itself, mum and I only had to leave our room a couple of minutes before our reservation to make it to the restaurant on time!

MI + ME St Pancras

Though we were a little worried it would be chilly as it's essentially outside, we didn't need to worry as on a chilly autumnal evening the heated lamps were on, and there were even lovely, warm blankets for us to wrap up in.

MI + ME St Pancras

As you might imagine, the menu itself is fairly simple and is based around, well, meat and cheese! The main options being either burgers or meat and cheese boards, with sides including mac and cheese and salads.

MI + ME St Pancras

MI + ME St Pancras

As we admired the setting and talked about what a beautiful hotel we were staying in (full post coming soon!), we ummed and ahhhed about what we would like to eat.

Well, mum did. 'Cause as much as I love luxurious dining, Japanese restaurants and tasting menus, I can't resist a good burger when it comes to comfort food.

MI + ME St Pancras

We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to accompany our meal, which was served perfectly crisp and cold. Though I have to say, we both would have preferred actual wine glasses as against the water tumblers that were served.

MI + ME St Pancras

As we waited for our meal I cosied up in my blanket; there's something wonderful about autumn evenings - just the right temperature to still sit outside (under a heater!) but cold enough to get nice and cosy.

MI + ME St Pancras

Before long our food arrived on trays, again in keeping with the theme. I have to say it smelt so good that it was difficult to make sure I had photos before I dived in!

MI + ME St Pancras

The burger was wonderful: high quality meat, cooked exactly as I had requested it, and topped with delicious British cheddar, served in a light and fluffy bun with garlic aioli, tomato, onion and salad.

MI + ME St Pancras

It was exactly as it should have been: fantastic ingredients, well cooked to make the perfect comfort food for two travelers!

MI + ME St Pancras

I mean just look at this! Pink and tender meat with oooooooozing cheese...

MI + ME St Pancras

The burgers are served with chips, which are piping hot, crisp on the outside and utterly moreish. Seriously. Moreish.

MI + ME St Pancras

Mum opted for a lighter option of a meat and cheese board and chose two cheeses and two meats: the Suffolk rosemary salami and Suffolk chorizo for meats and the Winterdale, a hard Kentish cheese, and the Yorkshire Blue Monday for her cheeses.

MI + ME St Pancras

Mum promptly declared that the meats and cheeses were all delicious, and that she was amazed that such beautiful meats could  have been made in our own back garden! Topped with chutneys, bread and walnuts, mum happily cleared her plate, happy and full of her comfort food!

MI + ME St Pancras

Now, if there's one food that positively screams comfort food to me it's mac and cheese and since we were indulging in comfort food we couldn't resist ordering a side of mac and cheese and I am so glad that we did!

MI + ME St Pancras

Topped with a crunchy gratin, and oozing cheese as you cracked the surface this was one hell of a side!

MI + ME St Pancras

Honestly, a real must order and a truly fabulous side. It was a rather indulgent meal I have to admit...

MI + ME St Pancras

MI + ME St Pancras

Even the sauces were served rustic style to match the decor and the vibe of the restaurant. Everything really has been taken care of here.

MI + ME St Pancras

Not quite ready to say goodbye to this spot, I ordered a cappucino, decaf to make sure that I slept, and mum had a chamomile tea.

MI + ME St Pancras

An evening of simple, but perfect, pleasures with your mum the night before a holiday; you just can't beat that can you?

MI + ME St Pancras

Don't have time for a sit down meal? Don't panic as MI + ME is available to take away as well, so can be enjoyed on the Eurostar or even on the way home.

Indulgent, simple pleasures. Make sure you don't miss this one!

A Luxurious Staycation at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London

0
0

There's nothing worse than rushing around before you travel; making sure you've packed everything and waking up every hour on the hour to ensure that you've not overslept and missed your flight.

With that in mind mum and I decided to check ourselves into the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel for a night of 5* luxury before an early morning Eurostar to Paris.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

We arrived at St Pancras station and were immediately greeted by the huge, seasonal Disney Christmas tree! I know it's not exactly what you'd usually find in a hotel review but I had to share a snap of this tree as it's such a beautiful idea!

St Pancras International

Check in was simple and we felt taken care of from the moment we stepped into the hotel, as our luggage was taken care of and we were told how to find our room.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

We were staying in a Superior Twin Room in the Barlow Wing of the hotel, which we were told had a lovely view of the British Library, but as it was pitch black since it was as late as 4pm, we couldn't see much at all!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

The beds themselves were like fluffy marshmallows; to the extent that even though I was so excited to go to Paris the next morning, that, well, I really wasn't that keen on getting out of mine!

I loved the large coffee table book all about the hotel and its history; though I didn't read it cover to cover it certainly made for an interesting skim read. If you're really interested in the history of the hotel, these books are available to purchase at reception.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

In addition to the two twin beds, there was the most gorgeous and comfortable chaise longue. Though the beds were comfortable, I always prefer sitting on a different piece of furniture otherwise I feel as though I've not left bed all day!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

It was covered with a gorgeous throw; an example of the high standards the the St Pancras Renaissance gives its guests in each aspect of the room.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

It's obvious even from the amount of furniture in the room that this wasn't a small room, as you can sometimes find in some London hotels.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

We each had a complimentary bottle of water...

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Though I loved the decor of the room itself, it was that of the bathroom that I really loved. The clean, neutral tones and the high quality fabrics really were as luxurious as you would expect.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

A little pet peeve of mine is when luxury hotels don't leave any wine glasses, but that wasn't a problem here as two very fine glasses had been left for us. In what I thought was a really great touch as this is obviously a hotel that a lot of people use for traveling, instead of having coffee mugs, they provided to go cups for us to make our coffee and take it straight to the Eurostar.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

The only disappointing thing about the room was that the shower wasn't very powerful, but as we were only there for the night and the rest of the hotel and our room were beautiful, it wasn't a real issue.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

There's something magical about getting all snuggled up in a hotel dressing gown, but these were even better; the gowns here are beautifully soft and ones that I didn't want to leave behind!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

The corner desk would have made the perfect blogging or work desk and even doubled up as a make up station for mum and I. I really loved that in this part of the room there are sockets for international plugs; a touch that really shows that this hotel knows its customers.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

After enjoying our room and getting reading for dinner, we headed to one of the hotel restaurants MI + ME for dinner.

We had a really wonderful dinner, though next time I really want to try The Booking Office bar or The Gilbert Scott for a meal and some drinks. Maybe even afternoon tea in The Hansom Lounge; the area where check in is dealt with, which happens to be the old taxi rank for St Pancras station!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Though we loved our room, mum and I really wanted to experience The Booking Office, so sat ourselves down to enjoy the live music and a glass of wine before going to bed.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

It's got a really lively atmosphere, and on a Thursday night it was jam packed. Though it has a casual dress code, it really is the perfect setting for a luxurious meal or drinks.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

I loved that the history of the station oozes from every aspect of this hotel at the same time as maintaining a clean, modern and fresh presentation; I can see that it's going to become one of my favourite London hotels as I can see myself returning time and time again!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Though we weren't in the hotel for long, sadly, as we had a 9am shuttle the next day, everything about this stay was so enjoyable. The rooms, the staff, the restaurants... Just everything!

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

After a delicious meal of comfort food and a very enjoyable glass of wine in The Booking Office, we headed back up to our room, popped our slippers and robes on, and watched a little TV as we drifted off to sleep.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

I already can't wait for my next staycation at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, a gem of a luxurious London hotel!

Must Visit Winter Pop Ups in London

0
0
There's something magical about Christmas in London; the twinkling lights, the real build up and shops such as Harrods and Selfridges decking their halls with the most gorgeous decorations. But it's not just the shops that go all Christmassy at this time of year - the restaurants have their fair share with festive menus and, my favourites, the winter pop ups.

Image Courtesy of Pop Up Screens
So here's my round up of the Christmas pop ups that I'll be visiting this year!

Cinema in the Snow

Pop Up Screens are transforming the 20th Century Theatre in Notting Hill into a Christmas haven from the 11th December - 23rd December and showcasing all of your Christmas classics with a side of hot chocolate, mulled wine and, of course, pop corn.

Image Courtesy of Pop Up Screens
Whether you're more of an Elf fan (Andrea, I'm looking at you!) or a Home Alone addict (that would be me!), there's something for you!

Area: Notting Hill. More info here

York & Albany's Winter Chalet

Image courtesy of York & Albany

I mentioned in my October round up that York & Albany have opened their Winter Chalet, and though I haven't had the time to visit yet, I'm really looking forward to this super cosy spot as a perfect date night venue. I'm so excited to get snuggled up under the blankets and enjoy a wintery cocktail and some nibbles and pretend that I'm hiding away in the mountains and not in London!

Area: Near Regents Park, Camden Town. More information here

The Lodge

Okay, so I really can't go skiing this year, but one of the best bits about skiing is the après ski and the foodie fun, aka fondue. Jimmy's Pop Up is back again this year in Clapham after a spectacular season in Balham this time last year, with another Alpine themed pop up. Think fondue from Neal's Yard Dairy, hot cocktails and a menu that changes daily.

Image courtesy of The Lodge Clapham

Yup, I think we all need to visit this one. They do promise there is always fondue...

Area: Clapham. More information here

St Moritz Ski Bar at The Goring

This is one that Catherine recently put me onto; think mountain cocktails and cosy vibes, all in the grand and beautiful venue that is The Goring Hotel. Catherine's already been quick enough to visit this beautiful pop up, so make sure you check out her review here and pay the ski bar a visit!

Venue: Belgravia. More information here

Mr Fogg's Does Christmas

You all know how much I love Mr Fogg's (in fact, I'm long overdue a visit!) so when I found out that Mr Fogg, Esq. is launching not one but two Christmas pop ups, well you can imagine how excited I was.

Mr Fogg's

Firstly, Mr Fogg is hosting a delightful bar at Winter Wonderland, a venue that quite literally screams Christmas at you. Winter Wonderland itself is a must visit for me at Christmas time: it might be very bright and there's lots going on, but get yourself some mulled wine, pay a visit to Mr Fogg himself and generally get a little bit merry. It's also a great opportunity to experience this amazing venue if you haven't been before.

Mr Fogg's

It's not just Winter Wonderland, oh no! Back at his residence, Mr Fogg is relaunching his Hendrick's Botanical Garden with a winter theme: the perfect place to relax underneath the stars in beautiful Mayfair.

Think mistletoe, holly and ivy, candles, decorations and more, that all transport you back into Mr Fogg's own Victorian Christmas paradise. It's not just the venue that's had a makeover, the cocktail list is also very festive; personally I'm already excited to try the Toodle-Pip Hot Chocolate, a personal favourite of Phileas Fogg, made with Hendrick’ gin, Mozart Dark Chocolate liqueur, Briotett Crème de Menthe Verde liqueur, home-made sugar syrup, double cream, espresso lungo and chocolate powder.

If that still hasn't sold you, Mr Fogg is also delighting us with his Festive Tipsy Tea, a delight that I really can't wait to sample.

Area: Mayfair. More details here

Rekorderlig Winter Cider

If cider is more you're thing and you're looking for a more casual winter themed pop up, Rekorderlig are opening their winter Cider Lodge opens on the 20th November for a Scandinavian wonderland full of cider, culture, food and drink.

Rekorderlig Southbank

Sample Rekorderlig both hot and cold or even enjoy their special range of festive cocktails. Make sure you catch this one by the 17th January when it closes!

Area: Southbank. More information here

Snow Queen Afternoon Tea at the Conrad St James

Designed around the theme of the Snow Queen, the Conrad Hotel has given afternoon tea a makeover and covered it in delicate winter frosts. With cakes including "The Magic Mirror", a salted butter shortbread, yogurt cream, frosted blueberries and sugar shards, and the "Snowstorm", a coconut cream, mint macaron and candy floss, you're sure to leave this tea feeling as though the Snow Queen herself was at your table!

Snow Queen Afternoon Tea

And with free flowing champagne for the duration of your tea, all included in the £55 price, this is an excellent afternoon tea to try!

Area: St James. More information here

The Nutcracker Festive Afternoon Tea at The Langham Hotel

There's something so beautifully elegant about The Langham Hotel, and it's a venue that I really can't wait to see around the festive period. Step into the Palm Court, a restaurant I visited earlier in the year, to be greeted by two 'soldiers' before enjoying the dream like state that The Nutcracker creates.

Be ready for the Nutcracker Victoria Sponge, with cranberry and white balsamic pate de fruit and the cinnamon Christmas tree shortbread. There are five sitting for this indulgent afternoon tea, so there's plenty of opportunities to get together with friends or family for a fantastic start to your festive season.

London you're a real beauty at Christmas and I can't wait to experience all of these!

A Weekend in Paris

0
0

There will always be a piece of my heart in Paris; my family and I used to visit every summer, in July or August, for an extended weekend, where Mum and I would go shopping, Dad would explore the city and on the Sunday (when all the shops are shut) we'd have a family day of exploring museums and Paris' cultural side.

After our staycation at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, last Friday mum and I took the Eurostar to Paris to celebrate her birthday.

Eiffel Tower
I was hoping to have lots of posts for you about all the museums we visited, the sights we saw, and the restaurants that we ate in. However, in light of what happened last Friday night we had a rather different weekend than we were expecting.

Arc de Triomphe

I'm not going to dwell on what happened and what we couldn't do, but rather on what we did manage to experience.

After arriving and checking into the gorgeous Hotel Powers, in the 8e arrondissement we set off to explore a little. How beautiful is this birthday cake that they had left for my mum? We were both so touched by a wonderful gesture!

La Maison du Chocolat Paris

We grabbed lunch in one of our favourite restaurants on Avenue Champs Elysées and admired the Arc de Triomphe in all her glory on a beautiful November day.

And then, well, we did what we do best - and hit the shops!

Avenue Champs Elysees

Avenue Montaigne, one arm of the 'golden triangle' of Paris, which is the area where a lot of the high end designer stores, beautiful hotels and restaurants live, is one of my favourite streets in Paris. It's always fairly quiet, and it's the perfect place to wander and admire the designer boutiques.

And it was wonderful to see it all set up for Christmas!

Dior Avenue Montaigne

We stayed in the hotel on Saturday morning and watched, in shock, as events unfolded. As Hotel Powers is only round the corner from the Champs Elysées, we decided to take an afternoon stroll and find some lunch. Even though many shops had opened that morning, most were shut by the afternoon, and any that were open were enforcing security checks before you could get in.

Having seen the Christmas market on the Friday afternoon, we were hoping to have a chance to explore it, but as the state of emergency meant that all markets were shut, unfortunately, we never did. Though it looks fabulous so if you're in Paris before Christmas it certainly looks worth a visit!

Christmas Market Paris

After a suggestion from a friend, we stopped in at Ladurée's Bar for an exquisite, luxurious lunch. We both loved the original take on the classic Croque Monsieur; I can't wait to share the whole lunch with you!

Eiffel Tower

Sunday is usually a quiet day in Paris; a day for visiting museums, or taking the Bateaubus down La Seine and visiting all of Paris's famous landmarks, but last Sunday was even quieter.

After a relaxing morning in our hotel, enjoying a leisurely buffet breakfast, we set out for a long Sunday walk. We started down Avenue George V, walked along the banks of the Seine and eventually came to the Eiffel Tower.

Even though it was shut, it was still an incredible sight - I don't think I'll ever not be stunned when I see its beauty! And it was wonderful to be able to see her in all her autumn glory, a sight that I had never seen before.

Eiffel Tower

I've also discovered that mum isn't a bad photographer - thanks mum!

Avenue Gustave Eiffel

We had the most relaxing weekend, and a weekend that despite events, was very enjoyable! I can't wait to share our hotel and some of the restaurants we were able to visit next week, but I thought I'd give you this sneak peak before the weekend!

Paris, I'll be back!

Blogging Ladies' Dinner at Boccocino

0
0

While blogging events are great fun, I really enjoy catching up with blogging friends in quieter surroundings and with less of us. So when Andrea invited Angie, Catherine and I to Bocconcino in Mayfair for a weeknight treat I jumped at the chance!

These ladies are some of the closest friends I've made through my little blog and I always love hearing what they're up to, from Catherine's trip to Poland, Angie's holiday of a life time in St Lucia and Andrea trying to get the work life balance that I'm going to be searching for next year there was a lot to catch up on!

Bocconcino Mayfair
We started with a round of drinks as we perused the menus and admired the beautiful decor in the restaurant.

Bocconcino Mayfair

We had a few dishes to share for our starters including King prawns and courgette tempura.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Crisp calamari with tartar sauce.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Delicious salty parma ham (a real favourite of mine) served with cheese pastries; a lovely dish, though I did feel that the pastry could have been a little thinner.

Bocconcino Mayfair

As well as the lovely caprese salad you saw at the top of this post.

Bocconcino Mayfair

There's one thing about food bloggers: when they know they're going to a restaurant, they pre-select their dishes. Aka when I say we're looking at the menus, we're really just bluffing as we already know what we're going to order. Angie and Andrea had already eyed up the tuna tartar, and even though it wasn't included on the set menu, they couldn't resist ordering one to try.

I much prefer tartar when it's in delicious chunks as against too finely diced as this was and I found the pepper in the dish to be more than a little overpowering, as did Catherine. But that's the thing with food - Angie and Andrea really liked the kick that this dish had.

Bocconcino Mayfair

I adore neutral tones (I'm really excited about decorating my new flat with all the neutral, comforting tones!) and immediately fell in love with the decor as soon as I walked in the door. It's a very luxurious setting, and a lovely place in Mayfair to visit for simple, modern Italian cuisine.

Bocconcino Mayfair

The restaurant itself is in the basement level, accessed by a very grand spiral staircase.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Before you descend into a very homely atmosphere in the main restaurant.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Catherine and I were feeling a little indulgent, and had already spied the lovely thin crust pizzas floating around the restaurant, and so couldn't resist ordering a couple ourselves.

Bocconcino Mayfair

I thought the thin bases were delicious; really crisp and not doughy at all, though not quite as good as Pizza Pilgrims when it came to the actual base. There's always going to be something comforting and delicious about pizza... And this hit the spot!

Bocconcino Mayfair

Andrea and Angie were being a little bit more virtuous at the other end of the table and ordered the sea bass with a potato crust. I didn't try any of the dish, but they both said the fish was perfectly cooked, though it did need a fair amount of seasoning to really bring the flavours out.

Bocconcino Mayfair

They also had sides of steamed broccoli (virtuous, I really did mean it!)...

Bocconcino Mayfair

And just a few chips, which looks scrumptious!

Bocconcino Mayfair

Angie and I were both being good by this point (especially after I'd just had most of a pizza) and ordered desserts to taste but not really to eat.

Between the four of us we ordered two servings of the passion fruit cheesecake, which looked delicious, though could perhaps have done with a little more base for those who love the digestive crunch.

Bocconcino Mayfair

As well as two servings of the tiramisu, which I tried and thought was really lovely; a great dessert to finish a meal, and a classic Italian dish.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Bocconcino is a great addition to the Mayfair casual dining scene, and a good bolt hole if you're looking for this type of cuisine in the area.

Bocconcino Mayfair

Especially if you're as much of an interiors addict as I currently am!

A Luxurious Getaway at Hotel Powers, Paris

0
0

The 8th arrondissement in Paris will always be my favourite; I love the hotels, the restaurants and most of all, the atmosphere. Hotel Powers, located on the exclusive Rue Francois 1er, just off Avenue George V, and right in the heart of the Golden Triangle, embodies everything that I love about this area. This one hotel that I've been very excited to share with you!
 Hotel Powers Paris
Upon checking in we were told that our Deluxe Room was almost ready, which as we had arrived just after midday, we were very impressed with! We said we were happy to go for a walk, enjoy some of the shops and then come back, but the lovely receptionist and the concierge both suggested that we should enjoy a glass of wine in the bar to toast our arrival.

And who were we to say no to that?!

As we enjoyed our wine and said how excited we were to spend mum's birthday weekend in Paris, one of the hotel managers asked if we wouldn't mind coming to see our room.

I have to say we were a little confused as we had just sat down... And she was quite insistent that we would want to see the room right then and there...

Hotel Powers Paris

And as soon as we walked in, I realised why! The hotel had left my mum the most gorgeous Maison du Chocolat birthday cake; a treat that we were really taken aback by. She wished my mum a very happy birthday on behalf of all of the staff and said that we should keep it in our minibar to keep it fresh.

Hotel Powers Paris

It was at this point that I knew we were in for a really lovely stay, with staff who genuinely care about you and your trip. Even though the weekend itself wasn't what anyone had expected, all the staff made us feel very safe and were exceptionally helpful and able to tell us what the latest security advice was.

If you're a lady like me your handbag is full of assorted rubbish and old receipts of important things and you're quite prone to losing your keys... Well, at Hotel Powers you still have old style keys which are handed in to reception as you leave so you're never able to lose it!

Hotel Powers Paris

Rooms in hotels in this area in Paris can be quite small as space really is a luxury in this city, but the gorgeous twin room that we had was incredibly spacious for the location. Two huge fluffy and frankly, exceptionally cosy, beds in the middle of the room...

Hotel Powers Paris

A huge wardrobe that I could easily have moved half of my wardrobe into (and that is seriously saying something!), complete with the cosiest robes that even rivaled those at the St Pancras Renaissance...

Hotel Powers Paris

And a truly beautiful, old mirror and fireplace. I love modern, clean hotels, but there is something truly indulgent about a tastefully decorated old style hotel, and Hotel Powers has that in spades.

Hotel Powers Paris

And, of course, no hotel room is complete without the famous Do Not Disturb sign!

Hotel Powers Paris

Though I like a hotel room to be traditional and old style, I really only like clean, modern bathrooms. I love the neutral tones, the excellent power shower...

Hotel Powers Paris

And especially the L'Occitane toiletries, which were refilled every day even if they hadn't been opened.

Hotel Powers Paris

There were also beautiful full length windows, which were wonderful for opening in the mornings and seeing the beautiful Avenues George V and Avenue Montaigne, especially the gorgeous Dior store all lit up with its Christmas lights!

Hotel Powers Paris

The beds themselves are covered with luxurious Epeda bedding, which felt so soft and welcoming, and just the kind of place you wanted to be after a day of exploring Paris!

Hotel Powers Paris

As we did have to spend quite a large amount of our time in our hotel, it was wonderful to have such a beautiful room to enjoy. There isn't a restaurant in the hotel, but there is a small room service or bar menu available.

Hotel Powers Paris

Though there is a buffet breakfast served in the old salon, or sitting room, of this old townhouse. No matter what you're looking for, for breakfast there will be something for you - though I would highly recommend the pain au chocolat, 'cause when in France and all...!

The bar itself is small but gorgeous and very well stocked. We loved having an apératif before dinner at the bar and just relaxing and unwinding with a glass of wine in hand.

I need to find myself a globe for my house I think...
Hotel Powers Paris

And then start ticking off where I've been and where I want to go next!

Hotel Powers Paris

Hotel Powers Paris

The staff were truly incredible, nothing was ever an issue, and every time we came in or out of the hotel we were asked how we were and how we were enjoying our stay. I adored the personal touch of the birthday cake and the gorgeous L'Occitane gift set that we were given; it really reminded me why I love smaller hotels.

With only 50 rooms in one the most exclusive and luxurious districts of Paris, this is one hotel you're going to want to book before it sells out!

Hotel Powers Paris

I know I'll be back; the location, the gorgeous Deluxe Room we had and the staff really made our stay an incredibly pleasurable one.

Paris, et l'Hotel Powers, je vous aime !

A Seriously Supreme Saturday at Yauatcha City

0
0

Recently, date day has been rather far back on the horizon as Andy's been studying for exams and I've had a rather busy November rushing all around London as well as doing some traveling! We decided to set one Saturday afternoon aside a couple of weeks ago and try Yauatcha City's new Supreme Saturday menu and have a proper date day.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

The menu itself is extremely generous; with a pre-lunch cocktail, both steamed and fried dim sum, a main course and a dessert before your final post lunch cocktail. Oh, and half a bottle of wine per person - so there's no chance of you leaving hungry or entirely sober!

I opted for a delicious Lychee Martini to start with, a wonderfully sweet but light cocktail whereas Andy chose the slightly spicy Thea Martini; an altogether more manly cocktail than might sweet, slightly pink option!

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Though the menu is based around the idea of sharing style dishes, the dim sum comes on separate plates so there's no need to worry about not being able to try all the dim sum.

The steamed dim sum, a pork and prawn shui mai, black pepper and wagyu beef dumpling, vegetable and truffle wrap, crystal dumpling with pumpkin and pine nut and a wild mushroom dumpling, are served first.

I loved the dim sum at Hakkasan Hanway Place, and as Yauatcha is its sister restaurant I was really excited about trying this course. Safe to say, the dim sum was excellent, though the vegetable and truffle wrap wasn't to my taste. The prawn and wagu beef dim sum in particular were wonderful - I could have eaten these alllll day.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

As Andy and I chatted excitedly about our upcoming trip to New Zealand (in less than a month - eeek!) and about my move into my first flat, the fried dim sum arrived. Now I had to be careful here because this all looked incredible but I wanted to make sure I had space for the rest of the meal!

From left to right, there was a mushroom spring roll, a sesame prawn toast, a lobster roll with a wonderful cream and a melt in your mouth venison puff.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Now these were spectacular; it was very tough to try and pick a favourite! I loved the texture of the prawn toast and the lobster roll but I have to say the venison puff just edged to the finishing line first. I kid you not when I say melt in your mouth, buttery meat and pastry and bursting full of flavour.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

After we had finished our cocktails our waiter asked if we were ready for the wine; what a question, eh?

He was wonderful and made sure that our glasses were topped up, discretely, throughout the rest of our meal.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Believe it or not, we had only had our starters and were still in for the delights that were our main courses. Andy's becoming a rather wonderful blog boyfriend, and when it came to ordering mains he let me pick first and made sure he ordered something different - he's a keeper eh?

We shared the lobster vermicelli pot; a steaming bowl of deliciousness that was as tasty as it was beautiful. Not the largest portion of lobster I've ever had, but it was more than enough, especially as there was so much other food available.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

I loved that it was served still in the shell; there's something wonderful about digging into the shell and finding all the hidden glory in that treasure chest.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

We had a side serving of seasonal vegetables, pak choi, which was a little disappointing as I found it quite flavourless, as well as two portions of rice.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Now the other main course that we shared was another delight; the truffle pork belly rib. Oh my goodness, the pork itself fell apart, in a similar way as the pork belly at Bob Bob Ricard, and was so tender. I loved the delicate yet slightly dark flavours and would happily order this dish again!

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

In fact, one of my favourite aspects of this menu is that, contrary to some of the set menus you can find (such as the one I had at Hotel Cafe Royal) the dishes are luxurious ones that you would want to order from the full menu and aren't second options. So it really is an excellent set menu at £49 per person.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Yauatcha has been high on my list for a long time now, and it was great to finally experience it as part of date day!

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

Now, there's always room for dessert in my books - especially when you're allowed to choose any dessert from the full dessert menu...!

I couldn't resist the chocolate pebble; dark chocolate, caramelised white chocolate and brownie... Mhmmm. It might be a sugar coma but it really is worth it!

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

And a rich ooze that any melt in the middle chocolate fondant would be proud of.
Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

In case you've got a hankering for another cocktail, you're in luck - with another three cocktails to choose from this really isn't a menu for the faint hearted! Andy opted for an Amaretto Sour...

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

But I couldn't resist an espresso martini!

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

The last plate to arrive at our table was the passion fruit dome, served with white chocolate, mango and coconut - a lovely alternative to a chocolate pudding.

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

I really loved the little personalised chocolates that are served on all the desserts - aren't they sweet?

Supreme Saturday Yauatcha

If you're looking for a really excellent, luxurious Saturday afternoon treat, Yauatcha City has you covered, because this my friends, was an absolute treat. Now I've just got to go to HKK and Yauatcha Soho - the list really is never ending...!

Old Family Favourites with New Friends at Le Pont de la Tour

0

When I mentioned to Dad that Le Pont de la Tour was having a serious refurb he told me that it was somewhere that we used to go as a family when I was younger and he was working in London. In fact it seems that my love of the D&D restaurants has been set since childhood as we also loved Quaglino's!

So when Angie asked if I'd like to enjoy a luxurious ladies' lunch at Le Pont de la Tour, I couldn't resist the chance!

Pont de la Tour
Situated right by Tower Bridge, as you might guess from its name, Le Pont de la Tour has an incredible view of one of London's most famous landmarks. I took the opportunity to have a brisk stroll on a chilly November afternoon along the Thames and take in the view before meeting Angie for a late lunch.

Pont de la Tour

As we perused the menu our waiter brought us still warm French bread for us to nibble on...

Pont de la Tour

As well as two lovely glasses of champagne. Well, when you're with Angie, you just know there are going to be bubbles and as it was a Friday I wasn't saying no!

Pont de la Tour

To start, Angie opted for seared yellow fin tuna with puy lentils and sweet peppers, which was a real treat for the eyes and the tastebuds! Served slightly warm and very rare, it was a perfect starter.

Pont de la Tour

There's something a touch risky about ordering octopus, as it's so easy to get wrong, but I plumped for the marinated octopus, saffron potatoes and olive starter, which was perfectly cooked. I loved the acidity of the lemon and the flavour of the octopus that came through.

Pont de la Tour

Beef tartar is a real French classic and when it's done well it really is one of my favourites. So I just couldn't resist! The meat was really beautiful, full of flavour and exceptionally tender; one of the best tartars that I've had in London and miles better than Jean Jacques.

Pont de la Tour

Though the portion was perfectly sized for me, if Andy had been eating, he would definitely have needed a little more food as the portion sizes were generally quite small.

Pont de la Tour

Even though I had intended to be good (whooops!) I couldn't resist the temptation of the chunky fries served with my tartar!

Angie managed to be a little healthier than I was when it came to sides and ordered a side of steamed spinach served in a very Instagram-able mini copper pot.

Pont de la Tour

Angie opted for the monkfish tail served with baby squid and sweet peppers, another very simple but excellent dish.

Pont de la Tour

Not only is Le Pont de la Tour a wonderful restaurant, but also has a great wine list (I'm suddenly understanding why Dad liked the restaurant so much!). Angie and I, having polished off our lovely champagne, opted for champagne cocktails for our next round.

Pont de la Tour

I couldn't resist the raspberry and limoncello champagne cocktail, I loved all the flavours and especially the presentation.

Pont de la Tour

Whereas Angie opted for a strawberry and vanilla cocktail and was very happy that it wasn't too sweet for her taste.

Pont de la Tour

I loved the decor of the newly refurbished bar and grill area with it's comfortable banquettes, leather arm chairs and gorgeous bar.

Pont de la Tour

A really stunning restaurant if you ask me.

Pont de la Tour

Angie chose the soft meringue and pineapple for dessert, which was okay but not as good as the rest of the meal had been.

Le Pont de la Tour

Whereas I couldn't (as always) resist the chocolate pot, which I polished off quite happily! A lovely way to end what had been a fantastic meal.

Le Pont de la Tour

This classic London restaurant is one that I'll be going back to time and time again; it's simple French fare but it's done so well, and at very reasonable prices, too.

Next time I have my eye on their bottomless brunch...

Pont de la Tour

Not quiiiite ready to go home yet we headed to the Mondrian Hotel for a couple of drinks before finally heading home from lunch at 8pm!

Mondrian London

All in all, it was a perfect Autumn afternoon with one of my favourite bloggers at one of my favourite restaurants: you can't ask for much more really, can you?

I'm afraid I've been a bit of a bad blogger recently, as real life has very much taken over blog life!

So I thought I'd give you a quick round up of what I've been up to and what exciting things you can expect on TLD soon!

A couple of weekends ago I finally had a ROKA experience when I went to ROKA Aldwych with a very delightful hashtag of bloggers, which was honestly one of the most fun afternoons I've had in a long time. In fact, it made me remember why I love blogging: it's the people you meet and the hilarious fun that you all have.

ROKA Brunch

In fact, Andy and I are going to ROKA Charlotte Street this week for a very special date night; he's never been before and we're tasting the new cocktail pairing menu - I can't wait!

Foodie wise, I had another gorgeous lunch with Angie at Dozo last week; a really lovely, authentic Japanese fine dining restaurant in Soho which I'm excited to tell you all about.

Dozo Soho

Travel wise, I made what was meant to be a surprise trip to Jersey two weekends ago for one of my best friend's birthday (the gorgeous red head in my Instagram snap at the top of this post) and had the best weekend! From partying, eating out, being blown away by insane weather and generally laughing for the entire weekend, it was a weekend that I can't wait to repeat next year!

The reason for me being MIA? Wellll, I've been house hunting for the start of next year for when I start my new job! If everything goes well, we've found the perfect place and we think we have it! I can't wait to share lots of interiors post in the new year as we decorate our little flat. It's also seriously exciting to be moving in with my best friend of far too many years  - so it really is all go at the moment!

Now that the house situation is sorted I finally feel like I can get into the Christmas spirit and visit some of the pop ups that I've been so excited about. Andy and I will be getting as Christmassy in the cold as possible before we jet off to New Zealand very soon, and I'm seeing Colleen this week for a delicious Christmas afternoon tea.

This year my Christmas cards are from Dot Creates, my very talented blog header designer, wo has just launched a gorgeous new collection! I'll be sharing more about these this week but for now make sure to check her beautiful cards out.

I can't believe the past few month have literally flown by; there's only a couple of months before I start back at college for the last 6 months of my academic training and I plan on making the most of every last second (yes parents, and resting so that I go back to real life rested!)

A Luxurious (Liquid) Lunch at ROKA Aldwych

0
0

After hearing so much about ROKA restaurants and their fantastic food from both Angie and Andrea, it's been top of my "must visit" London restaurant list for quite a while, and so when Time Out popped up with their incredible value £30 voucher for unlimited food and wine atROKA Aldwych, the newest ROKA restaurant, a hashtag of merry bloggers couldn't resist, could we?!

Roka Aldwych
Although we were initially rather worried about being seated in the bar and not the restaurant itself, I have to admit I actually preferred our seats (mainly for the lighting - what can I say it's a blogger thing!) as the room was bright, the table a little secluded and I have to say I didn't think it felt like a bar at all.

As we arrived, we were all given the complimentary bellini as part of the han setto brunch we were about to have, which is always a great start to a meal if you ask me!

Roka Aldwych

I hadn't seen Emma in so long, so I was really looking forward to catching up with her and picking her brain about all things kiwi before I jet off at the end of the month (we're hoping to get some bubbles in NZ too which I'm really excited about!). Angie and I have seen quite a lot of each other recently, and had altogether too much wine, but it's always a delight to see Mrs SilverSpoon!

The only lady at our table that I hadn't met was Ellie, from The Young Domestic Goddess, but I have to say I'm so glad we did meet - it's lovely to meet someone that I have so much in common with and get on so well with (she's definitely going to be my new spin class buddy)! I'd seen Aftab and May fairly recently at Roux at the Landau, but it was great to catch up with them and hear all about their recent foodie adventures and plans for Christmas.

As we caught up, we nibbled on the edamame, served with a ginger and soy dressing and perused the main courses.

Roka Aldwych

The han setto brunch is based upon a delicious selection of (unlimited) starters that are designed for sharing, as well as a main course each (or if your bloggers, also designed for sharing) before finally being presented with the famous ROKA dessert platter. Trust me, you're not going to leave this brunch hungry!

When it comes to wine you have a choice of red, white or prosecco - and at our table that was a resounding "Prosecco please!"

Roka Aldwych

The next dish to arrive was the spinach salad with sesame dressing, which I quite liked but wasn't blown away by.

Roka Aldwych

However, when the sashimi selection arrived, I started to realise what Angie and Andrea meant! Not only was the fish delicious and of a very high quality (I adored the salmon and tuna in particular) but it was so beautifully presented. In fact, it was so good that we had to order a second portion..!

Roka Aldwych

To try and keep us healthy, a tomato salad also appeared on the table, and added a glorious colour to complement the sashimi already on the table. A simple dish, but one that I really appreciated, especially with the delicious dressing that accompanied it.

Roka Aldwych

It was the two maki rolls that I really adored: sake to avocado maki, raw salmon, avocado and wasabi, and ebi furai to avocado maki, crispy prawn and avocado maki. Maki rolls are one of my favourite parts of sushi menus, but these I really thought were wonderful. I couldn't get enough of the crispy prawn: the textures, the slightly warm prawns and the incredible flavours really were something else.  Again, so good that we just had to order another round!

Roka Aldwych

Next up were the beef, ginger and sesame dumplings, which I also loved. Again, the flavours, the textures and the overall lightness of the dumplings made them absolutely moreish - so May and I happily dug in at our end of the table!

Roka Aldwych

One aspect of our experience that I really would compliment was ROKA's attention to allergies: Aftab doesn't eat pork and Ellie is vegetarian and allergic to nuts, and nothing seemed to be a problem. The waitress, very kindly, removed the bacon from one of the starters meaning that Aftab could eat all of the starters, and helpfully went through all the options on the menu with Ellie suggesting what she could and couldn't eat.

They even brought her her own maki rolls to make sure she wasn't missing out on anything!
Roka Aldwych

Believe it or not, we are still on the starters! Even at the full £55 for the food and unlimited wine, or £39 for food and a bellini, I think this brunch really is excellent value.

I love prawn tempura and so when the assorted vegetable and prawn tempura plate arrived I was more than a little excited! Crisp, light batter without a hint of grease covering delicious prawns, asparagus and sweet potato couldn't have made me happier. Definitely some of the best tempura I've had in London.
Roka Aldwych

The one dish that I have to admit I was quite thrown by was the potato salad with bacon and egg (served without bacon in our  case). I have to say I didn't like the look of it and was quite perplexed by a very British addition to an otherwise very traditional Japanese restaurant.

Roka Aldwych

We gratefully received our extra portions of maki rolls and sashimi, though the portions were definitely a lot smaller this time. Probably for the best since we still had mains and dessert to go...

Roka Aldwych

We asked our waitress if we could have a little break to let our starters settle and enjoy some more prosecco before our mains arrived, and she was more than happy for us to sit back and relax for a while before the next course, giving us a lovely relaxed feel as against feeling rushed as can sometimes happen on set menu brunches.

Roka Aldwych

Fortunately we managed to avoid the awkward blogger dilemma that is two people wanting to order the same dish (that just can't happen - think of the photos!)

Emma ordered the beef sirloin with spring onion and chilli, which was deliciously tender and perfectly cooked. A real winner of a dish and a must for any beef lover.

Roka Aldwych

Aftab ordered the very Instagram worthy grilled skewer selection which was also fabulous; I tried the chicken and was very impressed with the sweet and sticky glaze over very tender meat.
Roka Aldwych

I usually experience quite a large amount of food envy when I'm out to eat, but this time I feel like I made the best choice in ordering the salmon fillet teriyaki with sansho salt. The fish itself fell apart when you tried to pick it up and the glaze on the top was incredible. Sweet, salty and all around moreish it was an incredible dish that my friends were only too happy to help me eat!

Roka Aldwych

True to form, Angie opted for the sea bream fillet which she enjoyed, but thought might have been ever so slightly overcooked.

Roka Aldwych

Ellie opted for the vegetarian dish, the selection of vegetables from the robata, which she certainly seemed to enjoy as she polished off her dish quite merrily!

Roka Aldwych

Finally, May ordered the glazed baby back ribs with cashew nuts, which were, frankly, outstanding! I had a taste of one of the ribs and adored the sticky glaze, soft meat and contrasting salty taste from the cashew nuts.

Roka Aldwych

Again another small break was required before we could attempt the dessert platter (we wanted to give it our full attention), and we were all a little amazed as this beauty was brought in!

Fruits, a chocolate Buddha with a mango centre, ice cream and sorbets... It really was a feast for the eyes, the cameras and the stomach!

Roka Aldwych

It's a brunch I wouldn't hesitate to go back to again and again, and it really was a wonderful first taste of ROKA!

I don't think I've laughed so much (or had so much Prosecco) in a very long time; I had one of the most fun afternoons I've had in such a long time and it's one that I'll remember for a long time to come!

Something tells me this is the first of many more brunch dates with this hashtag of bloggers...

Feeling Festive at Fortnum's Lodge

0
0

I'm slightly in denial that Christmas is exactly two weeks away - my Christmas shopping is not going as well as I would like. In the spirit of starting to feel festive, Colleen and I paid a visit to Fortnum's Lodge at Somerset House and pretended that we were fresh off the slopes!

Last year, Andy and I skated at Somerset House, before enjoying a couple of glasses of champagne to really celebrate Christmas, but this year it was a much more girly affair. We'd both been craving some real comfort food, and so when we were planning our date day, it was all about the fondue.

I loved the theme of this year's lodge, with the fire, the garlands on the fireplace and the gorgeous faux fur throws, we really did feel as though we'd come straight off the slopes ready for some apres-ski!

The Lodge is run by Fortnum & Mason, the iconic London store famous for its blue bags, Christmas hampers and all round luxurious feel, so we knew we were in for a really luxurious treat.

When Colleen and I are together it's a fairly safe bet that there's going to be wine involved... So we settled down with a bottle of Muscadet and caught up. It was amazing to finally hear about Colleen's trip to NYC for Thanksgiving and to hear all about her Christmas plans!

As we waited for our fondue, we cracked walnuts and devoured tangerines that are left on each table: a really festive alternative to nuts and olives!

I won't lie, as much as I adore sushi, delicious French fare and luxurious Chinese food, there's really nothing better than bread and melted cheese.

So I couldn't have been happier to see this beauty when it arrived! Christmas is a time for indulgence, and well, this is pretty damn indulgent. I'm just glad I had the energy for a workout this morning, though!

Served with both baby new potatoes...

And light, crunchy sourdough bread, served in the most gorgeous mini F&M hamper.

We were pretty much in heaven. Cheesy, oooooooozy heaven!

I couldn't wait to get stuck in and immediately dived into the oozing deliciousness.

I mean, just look at it!

I wasn't even remotely sad when I dropped my bread - it just meant I was in for some more cheese!

From a foodie standpoint, the combination of the cheese were perfect; it had a great depth of flavour and the sourdough complimented this perfectly.

We kept dipping, laughing and smiling until all the bread was gone and we were utterly full of cheese1

The staff were amazing; always there when you needed them, but never hurrying you, so we sat and enjoyed the rest of our wine and contemplated if we could eat another thing.... I have to say we couldn't though I do have my eyes on their mince pies!

It's the perfect spot for a bit of luxurious down time post-skate, post shop or even as a stand alone lunch.

And you've got to see that gorgeous tree before Christmas, 'cause it really isn't a London Christmas without it!

Lifestyle Lately: New Beginnings

0
0
So it really has been far too long since I sat down and blogged, but that's not because of lack of things to blog about. In fact, quite the opposite! I wish I could say I've spent the last month on the beach...

...but at least I did get away for some winter sun! December was a bit of a crazy one for me as finding a flat was a little more challenging than we would have hoped and on Boxing Day I jetted off to New Zealand for a two week adventure. It was honestly one of the most beautiful and breathtaking countries I've ever visited and now challenges Sri Lanka as my favourite country, so I'm very excited to share snippets of the holiday with you.

London wise? Well, I'm now officially living here full time in a gorgeous little flat! Expect lots of interior inspiration and home updates, as I've discovered I'm more than a little addicted to home shopping... Oooops! I've already shared a sneak peak of my bedroom on Instagram but can't wait to give you the full tour.

As much as I wish I could say I've moved up to London to eat out, see friends and shop all day (the dream), I have moved up for a serious purpose: to finish training as a lawyer. So that means six more months studying before starting the real world of work and all the suit shopping, like this gorgeous little number that I bought yesterday.

That gave me an oh so dangerous excuse to visit the new kikki.K store in Covent Garden. Dangerous. Really dangerous. But oh so worth it! I'll be sharing my new addiction very soon!

So now what? Well, I'm back! More travel, London adventures and hopefully some exciting collaborations will be coming your way soon.

If you haven't already, make sure you follow me on social media to keep up with my latest adventures and never miss a post.
